JAKARTA - Instagram launched a new policy for Direct Messages (DM), making it difficult for people who are not followed to send spam.

Now, Meta as the parent of Instagram restricts others where they can only send one message if those sent messages don't follow them.

To receive more messages from the sender, users must receive chat requests first.

However, they can only send messages in the form of text. This means that users will not see unwanted photo messages, videos, or voice messages from spammers.

The feature, which was tested last June, is very much needed by users. The reason is, before this policy appears, Instagram allows users to send requests for messages in unlimited numbers and is very disturbing.

"We want people to feel confident and in control when they open their inbox," Meta women's head of security, Cindy Southworth, said in a statement, quoted by The Verge, Friday, July 4.

"That's why we're testing a new feature that means people can't receive pictures, videos, or a lot of messages from someone they don't follow, until they receive requests for chatting," he added.

This move, Instagram says, is a form of security, especially for women. Where they often receive nude photos that are not requested in DM.

Launching Engadget, Instagram is known to already have several tools to combat spam, including Hidden Messages hiding messages with unpleasant keywords and emojis.
