JAKARTA - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) developed an extreme rain prediction system that is associated with flooding for the DKI Jakarta area.

"There are three parts that support the development of extreme rain prediction systems, namely predictions, observations, and determination of the Jakarta extreme rain index," said the main researcher from the BRIN Center for Climate and Atmospheric Research, Asif Awaludin in a statement, Saturday, July 15, quoted by Antara.

BRIN uses the Satellite-based Disaster Early Warning System (Sadewa) which is part of the data prediction that produces data per hour in the form of predictions to determine heavy rains.

The satellite predicts the value of rainfall for the next three days using the output of the WRF prediction run.

Pada bagian prediksi didukung pula oleh radar nowcasting dengan menggunakan Sistem Pemantauan Hujan atau Santanu. Sistem itu menampilkan lokasi yang tengah dilanda hujan melalui laman https://santanu.brin.go.id.

Santanu analyzes the influence of the signal attenuation by rain. The results of the optimization are validated using a transportable radar image.

Then, the third part of developing the system is the determination of the extreme rain index which is carried out in synergy with research groups at the BRIN Center for Climate and Atmospheric Research.

"We use rain gauge data supported by our team members at BMKG. Then our global data uses CENS, CS, MJO, IOD, and ENSO data," said Asif.

Furthermore, he explained that the extreme rain index produces a reference for the intensity of daily rain which can cause flooding every season.

If the reference value is exceeded by the prediction data, it is estimated that the rain has great potential to cause flooding.

"The input of prediction data from Sadive and nowcasting Santanu is input for the machine learning random forest method to predict flood events based on the criteria for the rain index every season," said Asif.
