JAKARTA - General Motors Co is exploring the use of ChatGPT as part of its collaboration with Microsoft Corp, a company executive told Reuters.

"ChatGPT will be in everything," said GM Vice President Scott Miller in an interview last week.

The chatbot can be used to access information on how to use vehicle features commonly found in owners' manuals, program functions such as garage door codes, or integrate schedules from calendars, Miller said.

"This shift is not only about one single capability such as the evolution of voice commands, but means that customers can expect their future vehicles to be much more capable and fresh overall in terms of emerging technologies," a GM spokesperson said on Friday.

The news was first reported by the Semafor website, which says American automotive manufacturers are working on virtual personal assistants who use artificial intelligence models behind ChatGPT.

This year, Microsoft announced a multi-billion dollar investment in the ChatGPT owner OpenAI and said it would add chatbot technology to all its products.

Like other big tech companies, Microsoft has stepped up its efforts to embed more in-vehicle technology, from information entertainment systems to automatic drivers to operating systems that control battery performance and several other functions of the vehicle.

In 2021, GM partnered with Microsoft to accelerate the commercialization of driverless vehicles.
