JAKARTA - In an effort to prepare 5G services, telecommunication operator XL Axiata is holding a Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DDS) trial. This technology allows mobile operators to take advantage of the same network spectrum for 4G and 5G services.
"We are conducting a trial on three sites in Depok, which we do Dynamic Spectrum Sharing in collaboration with Ericsson. DDS is how we share the frequencies we already have for existing technology, for example 1800MHz and 2100MHz we use 4G and 5G," said the Director & Chief. XL Axiata Technology Officer, I Gede Darmayusa in his press statement, Wednesday, December 23.
Gede explained that Dynamic Spectrum Sharing will determine its own allocation amount for 4G and 5G depending on the number of subscribers and incoming applications. This technology also uses existing equipment or infrastructure, from the base band to the antenna.
The tests carried out on the spectrum that XL Axiata already has, namely 1,800MHz and 2,100MHz, according to Gede, have also noticed a number of devices that have been circulating in the market today, such as the iPhone 12 Series and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Series.
The trials carried out in the Depok area, to be precise UI Depok - Pondok Cina, Bunda Margonda, UI Relocation Campus, are in the optimization and performance evaluation stages.
"We have done testing, and the result is that if we look at the speed it reaches 176-180Mbps for the 5G one, but if seen from the latency it can be up to 11ms," said Gede.
These achievements, according to Gede, have not been optimized, for example by adding capacity and adjusting performance.
"So, with the current conditions when the trial was carried out, the results were very good, what we got was how 4G and 5G could share frequencies, could hand shake because this is non-standalone, each can provide the best experience for customers, of course we will. I expect a much better experience if the real 5G comes, "Gede continued.
In general, Gede said 5G will enable all operators to develop much larger capacities with the same spectrum or efficiency spectrum. Not only that, 5G will also make latency very low, so that between the data source and the customer who uses it will be much closer.
Likewise with connections, if currently only 20 devices are connected, then later 5G will allow bigger connections, up to 2,000 devices.
5G technology is also called Gede reducing power consumption, with a decrease of up to 90 percent compared to today. In daily use, this fifth-generation internet service will also provide a better data experience.
"Not only HD, even Ultra HD later, without lagging gaming so that the experience in playing online games will be better. The application of IoT as a new business, if currently is still limited, it could be thousands or even millions," said Gede.
"If now it is not only about the industry, we are also targeting wearables, which will later become a very large market share, not just smartwatches. Use cases will appear more and more once we get all these capabilities with 5G technology," he added.
