JAKARTA - The Indonesian government continues to strive to protect personal data by garnering global agreements for cooperation and finding synergies within the framework of interoperability of digital data flow.

Minister of Communication and Information Johnny G. Plate said that this year, the government is preparing for the future of data governance through the Digital Economy Working Group in the G20 Presidency.

"Our efforts to introduce the principles of Data Free Flow with Trust and Cross-Border Data Flow which includes the principles of lawfulness, fairness and transparency supported by all G20 members," said Johnny from a press release from Kominfo.

The Minister of Communication and Information is aware that Indonesia's journey in preparation for data governance is still very long and winding, however, he stated that the raising of this digital agreement had been widely agreed upon by all G20 Digital Ministers at a meeting of the Minister of Digital Economy in Bali, early last September.

"This has been widely agreed upon by all G20 Digital Ministers. We have achieved a substantive consensus on the issue of the digital economy," he said.

Johnny hopes that existing regulations in Indonesia can provide more comprehensive protection, because Indonesia already has a Personal Data Protection Act.

"In addition, it can also encourage and facilitate the security management of national data, and maintain public trust," he explained further.

According to him, the Government will continue to strive to encourage the involvement of all parties in order to realize better personal data protection.

He also asked for a commitment from all parties to provide support to the government, especially for the implementation of the PDP Law.
