JAKARTA - US-license trademark lawyer Patent and Trade Office (USPTO) Mike Kondoudis revealed in a September 7 tweet that his company has submitted a total of 19 trademark applications that include car brands including Mustang, Bronco, Lincoln, Explorer, and F-150 Lightning.
The trademark application includes virtual cars, trucks, vans, SUVs and clothing, for its brand and also includes proposed online marketplaces for NFT.
According to the USPTO document submitted by Ford on September 2, the automaker also plans to make downloadable works of art, text, audio, and video featuring its cars, SUVs, trucks, and vans.
The company also revealed plans for "virtual items that can be downloaded", namely, a "computer program" featuring vehicle parts and accessories as well as clothing for use in "online virtual worlds", including online trading exhibitions conducted in virtual reality and additional reality.
There is also the intention to create a market to promote "others' digital artworks" through websites, along with online retail store services featuring NFT and digital collections."
Ford's decision to enter the Web3 room came less than a month after Ford's Executive Chair, Bill Ford, and Ford CEO Jim Farley announced massive staff reductions from its global workforce to reduce the company's spending.
Ford itself is not the first car company to move into the Metaverse space. But the Ford Motor Company is the latest car brand to prepare for its entry into the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the Metaverse, by applying for 19 trademark applications across its main car brands.
Auto companies such as Nissan, Toyota, and Hyundai have also announced plans to expand into the fast-growing Metaverse space, while luxury car manufacturers such as Bentley and Lamborghini have launched their NFT collections.
