JAKARTA - Popular open-source streaming software, OBS Studio, is getting some new features. This feature includes the virtual AI-powered background of Nvidia Broadcast which allows users to change the virtual environment without using a green screen.

This feature is still far from perfect and will not physically replace the quality of the green screen, but it works fine. There's a bit of panic and fur as users move, but for streamers that shrink their webcams into small corners of their broadcasts, this problem won't be too noticeable.

The quality can also be further improved with strong lighting and a clear background environment.

Streamers have often used OBS broadcast software on services like Twitch or YouTube. Previously, it was possible to use virtual green screens on OBS viamain, but Nvidia Broadcast will make this feature more accessible. Those using the Nvidia RTX graphics card may already have installed software, and Nvidia Broadcast is also integrated with a lot of popular hardware and streaming apps.

For example, Corsair integrated Nvidia Broadcast tools into iCue and Elgato software in July 2022, allowing those who rely on Corsair or Elgato hardware to take advantage of certain features such as impressive backdrop noise.

Elgato Camera Hub also has access to the Current Virtual Background, which allows streamers to access the Nvidia Broadcast feature without opening the app directly.

Virtual Background is the only Nvidia-specific feature added to the latest version of OBS (version 28.0) but there are also other non-Nvidia Broadcast features that appear to the service, such as support for high-efficiency video coding (HEVC or H.265) and high dynamic range (HDR).

It will increase video compression by about 15%, according to OBS, and allow higher quality streaming to supported services. No doubt some third-party testing will check how useful this feature is for real-world performance.

Room deletion is also introduced to OBS to help reduce unwanted excitement during streaming sessions, although it should be noted that this is not listed as Nvidia Broadcast's background suppression, and is therefore likely to be a direct OBS feature rather than a third-party integration.

The 28.0 version of the app has appeared in beta since early August, but will be available for public download sometime today.
