JAKARTA - A few years ago Spotify created a second app that offers a radio station-based experience. Dubbed Stations, the app turns out to be closing later this month.

Stations, which has been in operation since 2018, is an application available for free and paid subscribers.

After debuting initially overseas with the Android version, Spotify launched the iOS version of the app in 2019 and opened it up to users in the US. However, now Spotify has started notifying users that the app will be closing on May 16th.

Before closing, Spotify reminds users to move their favorite pick list to the main Spotify app.

"Stations closed on May 16. Stations you created will be lost, but you can still enjoy Spotify by logging in with your Stations account. Find playlists created for you, plus millions of songs and podcasts," Spotify said.

Stations is a radio-focused experience that sets itself apart from the interface. Instead of having a library of songs or artists, the user is presented with a list of radio stations. These stations play automatically and you can scroll to another station at any time.

“Some of those tests ultimately paved the way for our broader user experience and others served only as important lessons. Our Spotify Stations Beta is one such test," Spotify said.

"We will be discontinuing the feature for now, but users will be able to easily transfer their favorite stations and enjoy a similar radio experience directly within the Spotify app."

Now that the enhanced Spotify Radio experience is present in the main app, it can now include personalized radio stations as well as news and music playlists for drivers.

Previously, Spotify announced a rebranding of its live audio platform from Greenroom to Spotify Live last month and will include its features in the main app while also leaving standalone apps available.
