JAKARTA - Google's Threat Analysis Group in a report published on Wednesday, March 30, stated that if Russian hackers recently attempted to penetrate NATO and military networks of several eastern European countries,

The report did not say which military groups or institutions were targeted in what Google called a "credential phishing campaign" launched by a Russia-based group called Coldriver or Callisto.

In 2019, Finnish cybersecurity firm F-Secure Labs described Callisto as an unknown threat actor. They are interested in gathering intelligence related to foreign and security policy in Europe.

"This campaign was sent using a newly created Gmail account to a non-Google account, so the success rate of this campaign is unknown," the report said, as quoted by Reuters. NATO itself was not immediately available for comment on the report.

The group also targeted the NATO Center of Excellence, Google's report said Wednesday, without elaborating.

In a statement, NATO did not directly address Google's report. "We see malicious cyber activity every day," a NATO source said in response to the cyberattack.

Russia, which is now under Western economic sanctions following its decision to attack Ukraine on February 24, continues to deny accusations of initiating cyberattacks against Western targets.
