JAKARTA - Krafton, PUBG developer studio announced its partnership with blockchain company Solana Labs.

The deal will see the two companies work together on the development, operation, design and marketing of blockchain and NFT-based games and services.

The partnership comes one month after Krafton announced its intention to enter the blockchain gaming world and said it would work with Naver Z to build a new Web 3.0 and non-fungible token (NFT) project aimed at building an NFT metaverse platform.

An important context for this deal is Krafton's share price. The Financial Times noted that Krafton's share price has fallen sharply this year in the face of stiff competition from China.

The Krafton deal comes as some Western developers have had to publicly distance themselves from blockchain gaming products.

Heart of Chernobyl developer GSC Game World has publicly scrapped its plans to add NFT to their upcoming game. Meanwhile, Team17 left its NFT project after at least three of its development partners expressed disapproval of its plans.

The South Korean studio has yet to announce which titles will likely see the addition of blockchain functionality, or whether it will be integrated into its flagship PUBG series.

“Krafton will continue to look for ways to partner with blockchain companies like Solana Labs as we work to build our Web 3.0 ecosystem,” said Krafton Web 3.0 roundtable leader Hyung Chul Park.

Hyung Chul said that Solana represents the best of the Web 3.0 ecosystem and its technology. Through this partnership, Krafton will gain the insights needed to accelerate its investments and deliver blockchain-based experiences.
