Monkey Kingdom Gets Hacked, Customers Affected By Phishing Attack That Wiped Out SOL Tokens

JAKARTA - On Tuesday, December 21, the nonfungible token (NFT) project Solana Monkey Kingdom, which has received significant support from American DJ Steve Aoki, announced via Twitter that hackers had taken USD $1.3 million from a community crypto fund through a security breach on Discord.

According to the developer, the first hack occurred with a Grape breach, a popular solution for verifying users on Solana.

The hacker then used the exploit to take over the administrative account, which posted a phishing link on the Monkey Kingdom Discord announcement channel.

Users who follow the link connect their wallets hoping they will receive NFT but their SOL tokens are drained by scammers.

Tragically, the hack occurred while users were queuing for the launch of the two projects. The Monkey Kingdom consists of 2.222 algorithmically generated NFTs centered around Sun Wukong, otherwise known as "Monkey King" in Chinese folklore.

All proceeds from the initial sale of NFT will be donated to charities of choice, with the aim of supporting the Asian community around the world. It was one of the most successful NFT projects coming from Asia.

One Twitter user, who goes by the name "commenstar," claims to have lost 650 SOLs, worth about $120.400, to the scam.

But not everything is lost. The staff at Monkey Kingdom have set aside a compensation fund for the victims and are on track to fully reimburse those affected. The time limit and the process for distributing the funds have not been disclosed.
