JAKARTA - Twitter has announced that all videos uploaded in tweets will enable auto-captioning aka subtitles, which provides more ways for users to understand all video content in their app.
According to Twitter, all videos attached to tweets starting today will have auto captions enabled. Subtitles will be enabled for muted in-stream videos on iOS and Android, while desktop users can toggle it on and off as desired by clicking the CC button.
Interestingly, the auto caption feature also supports 37 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, German, Hindi, Tamil, and many more. Since the translation is not live on Twitter, the captions will be displayed in the language of the device that was used to upload the original clip.
Quoting Social Media Today, Thursday, December 16, this feature is of course very useful for users with hearing loss, they can watch videos on Twitter with auto captions on, expanding access to more users on the platform.
Unfortunately, Twitter's auto caption feature is not editable at this time. The company states that both translation and editing tools are still under development.
The feature is the latest advancement in Twitter's accessibility features, which came after the company was criticized for launching audio tweets without a caption option, helping Twitter recognize the need for a more dedicated focus on the front.
Twitter also announced auto-caption for voice tweets last year (which it started testing in July), while auto-captioning is also available for Spaces. This is a great addition, and one that will have a significant impact on many users.
