JAKARTA – In the Flying Car Design Competition, Teknofest 2021, which was attended by 206 teams from various countries, representatives from Indonesia entered the final. The UI Flying Car Indonesia team consisting of six students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FTUI) will compete for the best flying car concept.
"Flying cars are further research from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) where the difference lies in the load and purpose of the flight," said AUAV UI Head of the 2019-2020 Racing Plane Division, Mochamad Rifqi in his statement, as quoted by Antara, this week. .
In this competition, his party developed a research concept with the title Fully Autonomous Tandem Quad Tilt-Wing Flying Car with Thermal Imaging Camera, 5G C-V2X Communication, and Advanced Cybersecurity System.
This flying car concept is equipped with reliable features to ensure the safety and security of users on the way from one point to another
The event was organized by the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology, Turkish Technology Team (T3) Foundation, in collaboration with several partner companies.
UI Flying Car is a team formed from research related to Urban Air Mobility (UAM) or flying cars in 2020 as a form of collaboration between students who have an interest in developing UAM research.
Under the guidance of a lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, FTUI, Dr.-Ing. Mohammad Adhitya, ST, M.Sc., the UI Flying Car team consisted of Muhamad Ilham Santoso (Team Leader), Mochamad Rifqi NA, Yogasatya Adikhansa, Tristan Adhika, Khalfan Nadhief, and Farhan Almasyhur.
Deputy Chair of the 2019-2020 UI Aeromodelling team Ilham Santoso said at Teknofest 2021, Indonesia had the honor of being a Guest of Honor. In addition to competing, the UI team also participated in filling the Indonesian pavilion in the exhibition of the competition.
"We hope that UI's participation in the Flying Car Design Competition, Teknofest 2021 will be one of the points for developing flying car technology in Indonesia to be better in the future," said Ilham.
The flying car product designed by UI Flying Car is named Skylark which is designed with the Hybrid Urban Air-Land Mobility concept. The Skylark combines two different vehicle concepts, namely an airplane and a car, so that this vehicle has an airplane wing and car wheels.
This makes this Skylark can be ridden in the air as well as on the ground. Despite having wings, this vehicle is designed to perform vertical take-off landing (VTOL).
"The Skylark uses a tandem-tilt wing with 16 motors mounted on the wing and can be directed forwards or upwards. When taking off and landing vertically, the wings will face up, while when cruising, the wings will face forward," he said.
For the mode of transportation on land, the Skylark is equipped with a wheeled section in addition to a self-driving system. When using the ground mode, the vehicle's wings can be folded.
"This is so that the Skylark has the same width dimensions as other four-wheeled vehicles on the road," said Yogasatya explaining the design of the Skylark's wings and wheels.
"The Skylark is designed to be driven by two passengers. It is equipped with various sensors such as cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar located at various angles of the vehicle," he said.
