JAKARTA - Los Angeles Galaxy right-back Julian Araujo has officially chosen to represent Mexico in the international competition instead of the United States Men's National Team (USMNT).

Araujo, the Mexican-American doubles nationality player is eligible to apply for a one-time substitution, having previously played for the US team. FIFA and Araujo announced on Tuesday that their request had been approved.

"My heart is with Mexico," Araujo said in a statement.

"I am grateful for every opportunity that US football has given me to help me grow as a footballer and now I am excited to continue my international career with Mexico."

Araujo has only played once for the US senior national team, but he has also featured for the Americas Under-23s and other youth teams. He turned down a call-up to the US national team last summer for the CONCACAF Gold Cup which the US won by beating Mexico in the final.

Araujo followed midfielder Efrain Alvarez and goalkeeper David Ochoa as dual nationals to switch from the United States to Mexico, but the US national team could retain teenage striker Ricardo Pepi.
