JAKARTA - Chairman of the Central Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Lt. Gen. TNI (Ret.) Marciano Norman said that every contingent participating in the Papua National Sports Week (PON) will undergo quarantine for five days.

According to him, quarantine is important to prevent the spread of COVID-19 when the biggest sporting event in the country takes place in Papua on October 2-15.

Marciano took an example when Japan successfully held the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the midst of the corona virus pandemic. At that time, the State of Sakura imposed quarantine rules for each contingent present based on the COVID-19 spread zone from that country.

For the red zone, said Marciano, Japan will quarantine for seven days. Then for countries with mild status, quarantine for three days.

"This is a consideration for us," said Marciano Norman at an event entitled "Preparation for the Implementation of the COVID-19 PON XX Papua Progress, Reflecting on the Tokyo Olympics" reported by Antara, Wednesday.

"However, for the time being we have taken five days of quarantine for all contingents present at PON Papua. They must also carry out antigen and PCR tests," Marciano Norman added.

On the occasion, Marciano Norman also revealed that all the contingents present at the Papua PON had undergone COVID-19 vaccination. Then most importantly, all those who go to the Cendrawasih Earth must be in the best possible health condition.

"So the people in Papua are also safe because those who come do not carry diseases," said Marciano Norman.

Central KONI continues to coordinate with a number of parties including the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) as the COVID-19 Task Force.

"We ask for guidance from BNPB as the COVID-19 Task Force, whether our actions have been good or not. If not, we will return to a meeting with the Provincial KONI so that input from today's activities is conveyed and PON Papua can be maximized," he said.

The implementation of the Papua PON will implement a bubble system like in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Every Papuan PON participant must comply with every applicable health protocol.

"So from the airport to the athlete's village, then from the athlete's house to the training and competing arena. Meanwhile, during the competition involving body contact, the participants will do an antigen swab first," concluded Marciano Norman.
