JAKARTA - Phil Foden has denied that his new hairstyle ahead of the Euro 2020 main draw was inspired by England legend Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne.

On Tuesday, Foden caused a stir on social media after posting a story on his personal Instagram account, @philfoden, in which he sported a new blonde hairstyle that resembled Gascoigne at Euro 1996.

Foden, who was included in the England squad chosen by head coach Gareth Southgate, admitted that he just wanted to change the hairstyle he had been wearing for a long time.

"I have had the same hairstyle for years. I thought it was time to try something new," Foden told reporters.

"When I woke up this morning, I found a lot of comparisons with Gazza and Eminem, even though this is my own style but people make it different," he added.

Nevertheless, Foden admits he hopes to transmit Gazza's contribution to England at Euro 2020.

Foden was only born in 2000, but he admits that he remembers seeing the highlights of Gascoigne's performances that helped England reach the semifinals at Euro 1996 and became one of the home fans' favourites.

"An extraordinary player, all over the country knows his role and what he has done for this team," said Foden.

"Of course it's not a bad thing to get a little bit of Gazza out on the pitch. I've had my hair dyed and it's going to last, I won't be changing it anytime soon," he concluded.

Foden was named the 2020/21 Premier League Young Player of the Year after helping Manchester City to the league title.

Foden and the team will start their appearance at Euro 2020 hosting Croatia at Wembley on Sunday, June 13.

England will also play two other Group D qualifiers at Wembley, against Scotland and the Czech Republic on June 18 and June 22.
