JAKARTA - The Indonesia Open badminton tournament in next year's calendar will be held in two weeks following the latest changes made by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
The international badminton parent announced a number of major changes for 2027 to 2030. Two of them are raising the level of the Denmark Open to Super 1000 and integrating Super 100 into the BWF World Tour.
The change makes the Super 1000-level tournament in the BWF World Tour calendar now five. The four were previously the Indonesia Open, China Open, All England, and Malaysia Open.
"We are building a sport that is relevant for future generations. Every element, from the competition format, prize increases, to broadcasting strategies, has been redesigned to meet the demands of the 21st century global sport," said BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, quoted from the official website.
The duration of the fifth tournament of the tournament was also extended to 11 days starting in 2027, which includes two weekends. Thus, the Indonesia Open which takes place at Istora Senayan is automatically affected.
The change was followed by an increase in the number of participants to 48 and a change in the match system to a group in the singles before entering the knockout stage. This was done to maintain the quality of the match and the commercial value of global badminton.
The reform is part of BWF's long-term partnership with Infront which runs until 2034. The cooperation is aimed at increasing the commercial appeal of badminton in the global market while strengthening the value of broadcasting.
The change in structure gives elite athletes better recovery space. A looser schedule is expected to maintain the intensity of competition at the highest level while reducing the potential for injury.
In terms of broadcasting, the number of matches produced for television has increased sharply. The total number of matches at all levels of the BWF tournament has increased from 1,410 to around 3,000 matches - especially the Super 1000 category with 1,095 matches will be broadcast globally.
In addition, the World Championships will also use a group system so that each participant plays at least two matches. Meanwhile, the Sudirman Cup as well as the Thomas and Uber Cups will involve more countries to expand international representation.
