JAKARTA - Joan Laporta has resigned as Barcelona president ahead of his re-nomination for the role when club members vote on March 15, 2026.
Club regulations stipulate that the incumbent president must resign before the election, with a management commission overseeing the club's day-to-day running for the time being.
The commission will be managed by Rafa Yuste, who has been one of Barcelona's vice presidents in Laporta's leadership since his election in 2021.
Laporta will face competition for the Blaugrana presidency from Victor Font, Marc Ciria, Xavier Vilajoana, and Joan Camprubi, all of whom have announced their candidacies.
However, in order for their names to eventually be listed on the ballot on March 15, 2026, they first need to get 2,321 signatures from club members who support their candidacy.
Laporta was elected in 2021 for a second term as Barcelona president after previously holding the role between 2003 and 2010, thanks to election victories in 2003 and 2006.
He beat Font five years ago after getting 30,184 votes against Font's 16,679, with Toni Freixa, who did not run this time, coming in third with 4,769 votes.
The election campaign will soon begin, with several issues that may affect the vote including potential player recruitment in the summer, club finances, the reconstruction of Camp Nou which is now in the final stages, and Lionel Messi's role in the future at the club.
