JAKARTA - A human rights organization accuses FIFA President Gianni Infantino of violating his organization's rules for his open support for Donald Trump and the peace award given to the United States President.

FairSquare, a London-based non-profit human rights organization, said Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at local time that it had submitted a request for investigation into alleged Infantino violations of FIFA's legal obligations to be politically neutral.

FIFA said the Ethics Committee did not comment on the potential for the ongoing case and could not confirm the receipt of the complaint.

The FIFA Code of Ethics stipulates a ban from football for up to two years for those who violate neutrality obligations although it is unclear whether this case will be followed up.

Some observers have seen that FIFA-appointed investigators and ethics judges are currently operating less independently than their predecessors a decade ago when Sepp Blatter was removed from office as FIFA President.

Infantino has expressed his views this year in favor of Trump and his policies. In October 2025, he used his personal Instagram account to say that Trump really deserved the Nobel Peace Prize.

The FIFA leader has also been in a close relationship between football and the United States Government ahead of the 2026 World Cup which was held with Canada and Mexico. The tournament is expected to generate more than $10 billion for FIFA.

Political leaders from the three host countries joined Infantino on stage to begin the 2026 World Cup tournament draw last weekend in Washington, DC, after Trump received his inaugural FIFA Peace Prize.

"This is what we want from a leader. You really deserve the first FIFA Peace Prize for your actions, for what you have accomplished in your own way, but you achieve it in an extraordinary way and you can always count on my support, Mr. President," Infantino said after the video about Trump played at the 2026 World Cup draw.

Infantino said in an interview in November 2025 at the American Business Forum in Miami that all should support what (Trump) is doing (in the United States) because it looks pretty good.

FairSquare's letter also refers to Infantino's Instagram post on January 20, 2025, Trump's inauguration day.

"Together we will make America back great, and also the whole world," Infantino said at the end of the video message.

FIFA has not explained how Infantino created last month's peace gift even though people familiar with the process in private conversations said they knew about it through media reports.

"Giving this kind of award to a political leader who is currently in office is a real violation of FIFA's neutrality obligations."

"If Mr. Infantino acts unilaterally and without legal authority, this should be considered a very serious abuse of power," FairSquare said in an eight-page complaint.

FairSquare has previously challenged FIFA regarding Saudi Arabia's human rights record, the host of the 2034 World Cup; the influence of the royal oil company, Aramco, who is the highest-level World Cup sponsor; FIFA governance standards; and a slow FIFA investigation into possible Statute violations related to teams from Israeli settlements playing in national football leagues.
