Kemenpora Distributes Sports Equipment Assistance For Flood-affected Areas

The Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) will distribute sports equipment to areas affected by the flood in Sumetera. The assistance will be distributed after the disaster as part of the recovery.

The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Erick Thohir, said that various sports equipment such as football may have been distributed next month, following the upcoming year's budget.

"We will provide sports equipment later, but after the disaster. We will give happiness again, not today," said Erick in Jakarta.

Floods that submerged several areas in Sumera accompanied by landslides did not only take many lives, but also damaged houses and various public facilities, such as education and sports facilities and infrastructure.

Various parties have begun to urge the Government to immediately set flooding in Sumatra to become a national disaster because of its larger scale and impact.

"We, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, share our condolences to the disaster victims in Sumatra. We will certainly play an active role afterward. We also want to help, entertain all those affected with our main duties and functions," said Erick.

Based on temporary data, the number of victims who died due to the floods in Sumatra and Aceh has reached 604 people. In addition, as many as 464 people are still missing.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that at least 290 thousand people were displaced due to the disaster that hit 46 districts and cities and at least 2,800 houses were damaged either lightly, moderately, or severely.

Kapusdatin BNPB, Abdul Muhari, said that the situation in the field was still very dynamic. BNPB, together with the TNI/Polri, Basarnas, ministries/agencies, and Regional Governments are still working to search and rescue, distribute logistical assistance, and open access to isolated areas.

"Conditions in the three provinces affected are quite heavy, especially because many transportation access has been cut off. However, the team continues to make maximum efforts to open access and speed up the search for victims," said Abdul.
