JAKARTA Former Palestinian National Team player, Mohammed Shaalan, was shot dead by Israeli soldiers in Khan Yunis, South Gaza, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
According to local sources, Shaalan, one of Gaza's most prominent basketball stars, was targeted when he tried to get food for his children.
According to Palestinian news agency Wafa, Shaalan is struggling to find food and medicine, especially for his daughter, Mariam, who is suffering from kidney failure and acute blood poisoning.
During his time as a player, Shaalan played for several local basketball clubs and represented Palestine as part of the National Team.
Shaalan's death left the number of members of the Palestinian sports community killed at approximately 670 people. Israeli forces have also destroyed 288 sports facilities in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
