JAKARTA - Hugo Viana has left his role as Sporting CP Sports Director. The Portuguese club announced on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

Viana, who will replace Txiki Begiristain who will leave as Manchester City Sports Director, is scheduled to leave Sporting CP at the end of the season.

"Sporting CP informed that Hugo Viana requested that his departure from the club be accelerated, which was originally scheduled for the end of this season."

"Considering the arguments submitted and based on a common understanding, Sporting CP's Directors have stopped their duties after the closure of the winter transfer market," Sporting said in a statement.

Viana, 42, has played in Sporting, Newcastle United, and Valencia and played 29 times for the Portugal National Team between 2001 and 2012.

He was appointed Sporting Sports Director in 2018 and helped the club win Premeira Liga titles in 2021 and 2024 despite intense competition from Benfica and FC Porto.

He was praised for signing current Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, as manager in 2020, who also played an important role in returning Sporting to the top of Portuguese football.

"Hugo Viana played a fundamental role in the club's growth during the period in which the Sporting CP main football team won several titles, namely two league titles, three League Cups (Taca de Liga), one Portuguese Super Cup (Supertaka Candido de Oliveira), and one Portuguese Cup (Taca de Portugal)," the statement said.

President of Sporting CP, Frederico Varandas, praised Viana.

"The work of Viana over the years is very important for the implementation of a solid and winning sports project."

"He played an important role in building a team that broke boundaries and marked one of the most memorable phases in the history of our club," said Varandas.

Bernardo Palmeiro will replace Viana as Sports Director at Sporting.

Meanwhile, Manchester City has a busy January 2025 transfer window.

Pep Guardiola's side spent 180 million in a bid to revive the season after a gloomy first half.

Manchester City signed Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt for a transfer of 59 million pounds, followed by Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for 29.6 million pounds, and Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens for 33.6 million pounds.

Prior to the transfer deadline on Monday, February 3, 2025, The Citizens secured the arrival of Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto by disbursing funds of 50 million pounds, equivalent to the player's release clause.
