JAKARTA Li Shi Feng officially replaced Viktor Axelsen who decided to withdraw from the BWF World Tour Finals 2024 season closing tournament this month.

Axelsen, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and defending champion of the BWF World Tour Finals, withdrew in this year's edition because he still had to recover from his injury.

"Unfortunately, I can't participate in the BWF World Tour Finals this December. I suffered an injury to my left leg, which caused a lot of trouble."

"I have been advised to immediately address it to avoid long-term problems," Axelsen wrote on social media X.

The withdrawal of the Danish men's singles made Li Shi Feng from China, who is currently ranked eighth in the Race To Finals ranking, entitled to replace Axelsen to appear in the event to be held in his country.

Li won the Japanese Kumamoto Masters 2024 last month to jump up to his current ranking. A eligible place to play in the event.

On the other hand, Axelsen has automatically qualified for the BWF World Tour Finals finals this season after winning a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

After winning gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Axelsen won the 2024 Hong Kong Open and became a semifinalist at the 2024 Japanese Kumamoto Masters and 2024 China Masters.

Axelsen has five titles in the BWF Superseries/BWF World Tour Finals. Two of them were won in the Dubai World Superseries Finals (2016 and 2017), while the next three titles were successive titles in Bali, Bangkok, and Hangzhou (2021, 2022, and 2023).

The draw for the group stage for the event which will take place in Hangzhou will be held on December 7, 2024, at 11.00 p.m. Chinese time to be exact.
