Diego Simeone Looks Emotional After Making La Liga History With Atletico Madrid

JAKARTA - Diego Simeone sobbed when he talked about his love for Atletico Madrid.

The cry broke after being asked about his long-term future following a 2-1 win over Alaves on Saturday, November 23, 2024. The match marked his 700th match as coach of Rojiblancos.

The Argentine has been at Atletico coach since December 2011.

He is currently the longest coach on duty at the top level of the Spanish league.

He is the first manager in La Liga history to reach 700 games as a coach in one team.

Simeone has always stood out because of the all-black clothes and fighting spirit he showed on the sidelines, when giving orders to his players.

Especially at home games, he signaled to supporters to give everything in order to support their team.

He is also known for sticking to the game-by-match approach in one season, never wanting to comment on games other than the next game on the calendar.

However, the 54-year-old coach showed his new sensitive side on Saturday when he was unable to continue his post-match interview with reporters.

Interviews on the pitch with DAZN should be a long chat. However, Simeone cut it off when he was filled with emotion after a journalist asked him how he felt about what Atletico would do when he was gone.

"I'm going through this moment. My players are working hard and interpreting what we need and want," Simeone said, stopping the interview.

"I am calm. I feel at peace. I am where I want to be," he said, before stopping for a moment when his voice shook.

"I like it, I like where I am and that's it, see you," he said before lowering his head and pushing the microphone to end the press conference session.

Simeone turned Atletico from a club that was chaotic and always lost to rival Real Madrid to the winning and regular team in the Champions League.

Under his care, they have won two La Liga titles, two Europa League trophies, one Copa del Rey, and reached two Champions League finals.
