Sheikha Asma Conquers Puncak Jaya For History

JAKARTA The climber of the mountain from Qatar, Sheikha Asma Al-Thani, officially won the title of The Explorer Grand Slam after completing his mission in Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid), Papua.

Sheikha Asma completed her mission accompanied by the General Chair of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (NOC Indonesia) Raja Sapta Oktohari.

"This is part of our efforts to support the development of sports and tourism in Indonesia. This has been proven by Sheikha Asma," Okto said at a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, October 14, 2024.

The Grand Slam Explorer is the title given to a climber for their achievements reaching seven of the world's highest mountain peaks (Seven Summit) covering Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Vinson, and Puncak Jaya, as well as skiing at the zeros of the North and South Poles.

Sheikha Asma is the first woman from Arab countries to successfully hold the title Explorer Grand Slam. In addition, he is also the first Qatari to reach Puncak Carstensz.

"Carstensz Pyramid is a unique resilience challenge because reaching its peak is the last step in my quest to complete the Grand Slam Explorer," Sheikha Asma said.

Sheikha Asma's journey to get the Grand Slam Explorer title began in 2014 when she first stood at the top of Kilimanjaro.

He then continued his struggle by skiing in the Arctic in 2018 and reached the highest peak in Latin America, Mount Accagua (6,962 meters above sea level).

Furthermore, in 2021, Sheikha Asma managed to reach the highest peak in Europe, namely Mount Elbrus (5.642 meters above sea level) and the highest peak in Antarctica, Vinson Massif (4.892 meters above sea level).

The following year he continued the Grand Slam Explorer expedition by skiing at the South Pole, standing at the highest point of the earth on the Asian continent, Mount Everest (8,848 meters above sea level), and reaching the Puncak Denali (6,190 meters above sea level) on the North America continent.

"I hope this experience can inspire others, especially young women in the Arab world and out there, to realize that there are no too big dreams," said Sheikha Asma.
