Inter Miami Wins MLS Supporters Shield, Messi Leads Historical Printing Club

JAKARTA - Inter Miami won the MLS Supporter'Shield 2024 trophy after being the best in the regular league season.

Inter Miami's points were no longer a catch even though they still had two games left.

Manchester United legend David Beckham's club scored 68 points from 32 matches.

Inter Miami's certainty of winning the Major League Soccer (MLS) this season was obtained after they beat Columbus Crew 3-2 on October 3, 2024 local time.

Lionel Messi led Inter Miami to secure the MLS Supporters' Shield trophy thanks to his two goals in the match.

The 37-year-old scored two brilliant goals, including a stunning free-kick, before Luis Suarez completed three Inter Miami goals.

MLS Supporters' Shield this season is Inter Miami's first since its founding in 2018.

For Messi, the trophy has made the title window increase to 46 throughout his career.

Lionel Messi made Inter Miami make history with a contribution of 17 goals and 12 assists in his 19 matches at the 2024 MLS.

"I'm happy. We took control from the start. We have players to do this."

"I'm happy to secure the first destination and we're thinking about our next destination," said Messi as reported by The Sun.

David Beckham as the owner of the club did not escape appreciating his troops through his personal Instagram account.

"So proud to see our players lift Supporters' Shield after Columbus' great win."

"Another extraordinary achievement in the history of this football club and very happy to bring this trophy to fans in the league."

"Now, we are moving on again and towards the next one," Beckham wrote.

A former Barcelona quartet looks to celebrate Inter Miami's glory in the dressing room, namely Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Suarez, and Messi posing with trophies.

Prior to the arrival of the four players, Inter Miami was at the bottom of the MLS standings.

Inter Miami has never been at the top of the MLS standings four seasons before. At best, they are ranked 12th in the regular season in the 2022 edition.

In another three seasons, Inter Miami was recorded in 19th position (2020), 20th place (2021), and 27th ladder (2023) as a whole regular season.

Furthermore, Inter Miami will fight in the 2024 MLS Cup which will be held on 23 October-7 December 2024. They passed the 2024 MLS Cup playoffs as winners of MLS Eastern Conference.

Meanwhile, the MLS Supporters' Shield 2024 trophy is Inter Miami's second title since its establishment. Their first trophy was obtained in the 2023 season when they won the Leagues Cup.
