Hong Kong Open 2024: Not The Beginning Of Beautiful Gregoria

JAKARTA Gregoria Mariska Tunjung's women's singles effort to win her first tournament after winning a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics ended not beautifully.

The 25-year-old missed the Japan and Korean Open 2024 tournament before finally taking part at the Hong Kong Open 2024 this week. However, his journey immediately stopped in the second half.

Gregoria's move in this tournament had to stop early after she lost in the rubber games 12-21, 21-15, and 10-21 against Thailand's women's singles, Ratchanok Intanon, on Thursday, September 12, 2024, noon WIB.

"It's not the result that I expect to be sure. My game is also not good," said Gregoria in a statement received from PBSI.

This defeat exacerbated Gregoria's record against Intanon. Of the total 11 clashes, the badminton player from Wonogiri has only won twice.

The two wins came in the two latest tournaments before the meeting in Hong Kong, each in the 2024 Uber Cup quarter-finals and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"Ratchanok today could have more control over field conditions, especially in the third game. While I can't do it," said the 2017 junior world champion.

Gregoria will next play at the 2024 China Open next week, which will take place on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, until Sunday, September 22, 2024. The event is a Super 1000 BWF level tournament.

"Hopefully at the 2024 China Open next week I can perform better than this. There are still a few days to prepare. So, I want to try to improve my physical condition," said Gregoria.

Gregoria is the second representative of Indonesia to be eliminated from the Hong Kong Open 2024. He followed in the footsteps of his colleague, Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi, who was eliminated first.
