Indonesia Installs Its Own AC At The 2024 Paris Olympics

Outdoor sports such as rock climbing at the 2024 Olympics at Le Bourget will be affected by the hot temperature of Paris City (doc. olympics.com).

JAKARTA The Indonesian contingent was forced to install its own air conditioning or air conditioning due to extreme weather that was hitting Paris City, France.

During the Olympics, the European region including Paris City and its surroundings recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. The weather in Paris is also uncertain, such as the two days of the opening of cold temperatures reaching 20 degrees Celsius.

Paris has returned to heat in the last two days. The French meteorological agency issued a warning for Tuesday, July 30, 2024, and Wednesday, July 31, 2024, that the city of Paris and its surroundings will reach a hot temperature of 35 degrees Celsius.

The head of the Indonesian contingent or Chef de Mission, Anindya Bakrie, said that the situation made them have to install air conditioning in order to provide comfort to athletes.

"We installed air conditioning in the athlete's room. In total there are 15 portable air conditioning units whose aim is to anticipate the hot weather in Paris City," he said.

Hot weather is one of the challenges for all contingents and spectators who come to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

This condition was felt for several outdoor matches, such as sport climbing (pejat tebig) at Le Bourget and archery at Esplanade des Invalides.

As is known, the committee that organizes the Olympics does not provide air conditioning in Olympic Village athletes' rooms. This is an effort to reduce carbon emissions.

To keep the temperature in the athlete's room maintained, the organizers use natural resources and an underground cooling system similar to the one in the Louvre Museum.

The organizers took water from the Seine River for a water-based cooling system in the Athlete Village. The cold water will then be channeled through building pipes so that it will automatically reduce the temperature throughout the athlete's room.

Several reports say that the construction of an Athlete Village like this will take seven years and cost around US$2 billion or equivalent to Rp32.5 trillion.
