JAKARTA - French police have arrested a Russian citizen who is suspected of having plans to disrupt the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The suspected 40-year-old was detained on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, local time after police raided his home at the request of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Paris Prosecutor's Office said in an official statement that the evidence found at the suspect's home raised "worries about his intention to organize events that might lead to instability during the Olympics".

The suspect who was arrested has now been placed in pre-trial detention. He may face up to 30 years in prison.

The Russian Embassy in Paris said it had not received an official notification of the detention.

"We proactively ask for their clarification. We will ask for their response," the statement read.

This arrest clearly exacerbated relations between France and Russia. The two countries have not been familiar for months because President Emmanuel Macron is a strong critic of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

France also did not pass much accreditation of Russian journalists covering the 2024 Paris Olympics for security reasons. This is what makes Russia angry and calls France paranoid.

The Paris 2024 Olympics will officially open on Friday, July 26, 2024, local time. The opening ceremony takes place outside the stadium, precisely along the cinema River.

France has launched its biggest security operations to secure the Olympics. This is due to the current geopolitical situation due to the war in Ukraine and Gaza.
