JAKARTA - Maarten Paes officially has the status of an Indonesian citizen (WNI) at the end of April 2024. However, he is still suspended to defend the Indonesian national team.

The issue of the transfer of federations from KNVB (Netherlands) to PSSI (Indonesia) is still stagnant.

FIFA Statua stated that Maarten Paes was deemed unable to move federations because of age constraints.

In the FIFA Statua, Article 9 Paragraph 2B item iii states that the age limit for players to change federations is 21 years.

Meanwhile Paes was only naturalized when he was 25 years old. He also had time to defend the Dutch U-21 at Euro U-21 2020.

In fact, Maarten Paes has also lived in the Dutch U-19 (2016-2017) and U-20 (2018).

The matter was then brought by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) or the Court of Arbitration for Sport. This step was taken by PSSI so that Maarten Paes could defend the Indonesian national team.

The problem is, the Garuda Squad will face the Third Round of the 2026 World Cup Qualification in the Asian Zone in September 2024. This means that the issue of the transfer of this federation must be completed before the agenda so that Maarten Paes can appear.

However, in List of Hearings CAS or trial lists from July to October 2024, there were no cases of Maarten Paes.

This means that the fate of Maarten Paes to defend the Indonesian national team is still confusing.

Responding to this, PSSI said there was still an open opportunity to solve the Maarten Paes problem. Lobbying with FIFA seems to be the next step when CAS has yet to update the arbitration trial schedule.

Through Arya Sinulingga, PSSI Executive Committee (Exco), the federation is still looking for other ways to formulate a legal strategy to complain to FIFA to solve this problem.

"The name is there is a process, before we come here (CAS trial), we are working on this first. Who knows we don't need to go there (coup on CAS)."

"During the process of complaining (Maarten Paes) there is still time (at CAS), we are looking for other businesses here (FIFA) until all existing limits are completely exhausted."
