Sports Officers In Italy Urged To Volunteer For COVID-19 Handling

JAKARTA - While several Italian clubs are trying to hold training sessions again, the association of sports medics invited 4 thousand of its members to volunteer at the hospital during the COVID-19 or corona virus pandemic.

The death toll in Italy has now surpassed China with 3,405 people dying from coronavirus, including a number of doctors. These conditions are at a breaking point, especially in the worst-hit region of Lombardy.

A statement from the FMSI (Italian Federation of Medical Workers) invited 4 thousand of its members to volunteer at a local hospital and contribute to the country by offering their services.

“As medics, even before we become sports medics, we have to think about this national emergency. With great responsibility, we see retired doctors returning to help and sending newly qualified children to the front lines.

"We can't stand by!"

Medics have also made it clear that they oppose efforts by clubs like Lazio, Brescia and Cagliari to resume training during the pandemic.

Meanwhile it is reported that several Serie A clubs are ready to reject the idea of playing Champions League and Europa League matches at the weekend.

UEFA and the European Club Association agreed to remove restrictions that prohibit UEFA competitions from taking place at weekends.

However, it is reported that most Serie A clubs insist they will not accept the change in schedule and will only play domestic matches on Saturday and Sunday.

FIGC President, Gabriele Gravina, previously emphasized the initial idea of the two European competitions to be continued on May 2-3, but it all depends on how quickly the coronavirus pandemic ends.
