Thomas Cup 2024 Results: Indonesia Steps Into Final

JAKARTA The Indonesian men's badminton team beat Taiwan and qualified for the 2024 Thomas Cup final. The bronze winner at the Tokyo Olympics managed to show his class.

Ginting won over Taiwan's first seed Chou Tien Chen through two straight sets with a score of 21-18, 21-19 within 51 minutes of the match which was held at the Chengdu Hi Tech Zone Sports Center Gymnasium, Chengdu, China. Saturday, March 4 evening WIB.

Indonesia got the first advantage through Anthony Sinisuka Ginting. The bronze medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics won two straight games over Chou Tien Chen. This is his tenth victory out of a total of 16 matches by the 34-year-old badminton player.

"I'm quite happy with today's performance. From the ups and downs in the field I can handle it. When chasing points, winning and then almost being followed, when I'm left behind, I can catch up. Everything can be arranged and controlled properly," Ginting said after the match.

The men's doubles pair Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto then gave Indonesia a 2-0 lead in the second match. The world's number one men's doubles came from the loss of the first game to beat Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist pair Lee Yang/Wang Chi Lin.

"In the second and third games, the support of the team behind is very meaningful. It burns enthusiasm and adds to our confidence," Rian said after the match.

The final ticket to Indonesia is determined through Jonatan Christie who plays in the third party. The All England 2024 winner won two straight games against Wang Tzu Wei.

This is the third consecutive final for Indonesia in the Thomas Cup. In the two previous editions, Indonesia won (2021) and runner-up (2022). Before the Thomas team, Indonesia had also placed representatives from the women's team in the Uber Cup final. It was the Uber team's first final since 2008.
