JAKARTA - The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee plans to add at least 11 women to the board when the panel increases its membership from 35 to 45.

In a Reuters report as quoted by Antara, it was said that the information came after the Chair of the Organizing Committee, Seiko Hashimoto, issued a firm statement regarding the composition of the board, 40 per cent of which must be occupied by women.

The committee is now in the final stages of decision-making, with a recent report adding that new recruits will include former Olympians and those with experience in athletics and academics.

With only seven women members on the board, or 20 per cent of the 34 quotas in the council, 11 more people are still needed so that the percentage becomes 40 per cent.

Hashimoto replaced 83-year-old former prime minister Yoshiro Mori last week, following his resignation after a furore over sexist remarks about women.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will run from July 23 to August 8, and the Paralympics from August 24 to September 5.
