YOGYAKARTA - The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced a new schedule for the annual badminton tournament calendar for the 2023-2026 period. This new format will be followed over four years, starting next year. There are some interesting changes made at the level of badminton tournaments?

BWF has added more tournaments in their different World Tour groups at various levels. Four new tournaments announced will take place in countries such as Japan, Canada, Finland and Australia from 2023 onwards. But above all that, there are also several other transitions at various tournament levels.

According to the BWF calendar, there are five levels of various types of tournaments that take place every year. The five are Super 1000, Super 750, Super 500, Super 300 and Super 100 tournaments that occur every year. In addition, the only tournament that beats this is the World Champion and the badminton Olympics. So what is the main difference between these four levels? Let's see.

BWF World Championships Or Olympics

At the top of the BWF 'class system' is a different BWF World Championship or Olympics. The Olympics only occur once every four years, so they are only counted that year. However, the BWF World Championships take place every year. Moreover, the Thomas, Uber, and Sudirman Cups are all class one in the badminton tournament system.

The winner of the 'level one' tournament was awarded 13,000 points in the ranking system, with runners-up getting 11,000 points and third place winner 9,200 points. However, at the Olympics, the third winner (or bronze medalist) received 10,100 points and the fourth winner got 9,200 points.

Super 1000

The Super 1000 Edition on the BWF World Tour features several of the most prestigious badminton competitions every year. From 2023-2026, only All England, Indonesia Open, China Open, and Malaysia Open are considered to be at the Super 1000 level. The Asian Championships are also at this level. Super 1000 is considered a 'Grade 2, Level 1-2' in the BWF annual calendar and has prize money of $1,000,000.

The winner of the Super 1000 tournament was awarded 12,000 points in World Ranking, with runners-up receiving 10,200 points and 8,400 points, respectively. The tournament was held with great respect and importance under the BWF World Tour Finals and major tournaments such as the Olympics.

Super 750

The Super 750 Tournament is only one level below Super 1000 and Level 2 (Level 3) in the badminton system. There will be 6 tournaments under the Super 750 class which will take place from 2023-2026, namely China Masters, French Open, Denmark Open, Singapore Open, Japan Open, and India Open.

In fact, the India Open has been upgraded from Super 500 level to Super 750 level for the next five years. This could be due to India's victory in the Thomas Cup earlier this year. The tournament winners below this level received 11,000 points, with runners-up getting 9,350 points and third/fourth place getting 7,700 points.

Super 500

The Super 500 Grade is Grade 2 (Level 4) of the BWF Tournament Ranking system. The Japan Open has been added to this level to take place from 2023 onwards as a new competition. That helps the Super 500 tournament be increased to 9 for a year.

These are Indonesia Masters, Thailand Open, Finland Open, Australia Open, Canada Open, Hong Kong Open, Korea Open, Japan Open, and Malaysia Open. At this level, the winner of this tournament will receive 9,200 points ranked. Runner-up will be awarded 7,800 points and the third/fourth finisher 6,420 points.

Super 300

Super 300 features several relatively small badminton tournaments held annually. It is included in the Grade 2 (Level 5) category in the tournament ranking system and has 11 tournaments each year.

The new India Open has been included at the Super 300 level for the 2023-2026 level as well. The other 10 tournaments below this level consist of Thailand Masters, Spain Masters, US Open, Korea Masters, Germany Open, Hylo Open, Swiss Open, Taipei Open, New Zealand Open and the new France Open are also included in this category.

The tournament winner will receive 7,000 points, with runners-up receiving 5,950 points and finishing third/fourth with 4,900 points.

Super 100

The Super 100 tournament is included in the Grade 2 (Level 6) category. This tournament usually features several badminton players who are lower than around the world trying to climb stairs in the BWF World Rankings.

This year, there are six tournaments that will take place at this level. Open Odisha, which took place at Cuttack in January, took place at this level. However, the 2022 Akita Masters in Japan have been canceled due to Covid-19 restrictions. Currently, the Canada Open and Vietnam Open in September will be held in the Super 100 category and the Indonesia Masters Super 100 in October.
