JAKARTA - The General Chairperson (Ketum) of the Central Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Lt. Gen. Marciano Norman officially opened the 2022 Indonesian Taekwondo National Championship (Kejurnas) at the Indoor Stadium Fort Taruna Sport Center Tangerang, Banten, Thursday.

In addition to being attended by the Head of the Central KONI, the opening of the National Championships was attended by the Chairman of the Executive Board of Taekwondo Indonesia (PBTI) Thamrin Marzuki, Deputy 4 Kemenpora Raden Isdianto, Representatives from the Ministry of SOEs, the Tangerang Regency Secretary, and all PBTI administrators and the Chairmen of the Indonesian Taekwondo Provincial Government.

"Thank you to PBTI for organizing a very good event, for advancing the Taekwondo sport. I am sure that through this National Championship, talented young athletes will emerge who can present achievements for Indonesia as targeted by the Great Design of National Sports (DBON)," said Marciano, quoting Antara, Thursday.

"Kournas participants this time are athletes who have gone through the long stages of coaching and competition, so those who are here are the really best athletes in Indonesia. I hope that the athletes who won the National Championships this year will be able to talk a lot on the world stage through brilliant achievements."

PBTI chairman Thamrin reminded all athletes to compete with maximum and sporting abilities. He is also optimistic, at the same time hoping that, from this National Championship, a potential athlete for the future of Taekwondo Indonesia will be born who will carry the name of the nation and state in the international arena.

"I am optimistic that the Taekwondo National Championship, whose participants are champions in the Vokerwil event, will present a tight match. The PBTI target is indeed in the long term, namely the 2032 Olympics, so the National Championship which is the culmination point of a series of Regional Championship matches in six regions, is the output that will be one of the barometers or benchmarks for coaching and developing athletes' achievements," said Thamrin.

The 2022 Taekwondo National Championship competes in two categories, namely kyorugi (batung) and Poolmsae (jurus). A total of 865 athletes from 32 provinces in Indonesia also competed in the National Championships. Of all the athletes who competed, 284 of them competed in the senior category, 322 athletes in the junior category and 259 athletes will fight in the cadet category.

The chairman of the 2022 National Championships Organizing Committee, Taekwondo, Ruminta, explained that there was a difference between this year's National Championships and the previous one. Athletes competing in the 2022 National Championships were champions at the Regional Championships (Kejurwil) which had been held earlier. This year's territory is divided into six regions that organize regional championships.

All of the Regional Championships have been successfully implemented before. Vokerwil I was held in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam Province which is the host, Vokerwil 2 was held in South Sumatra, Vokerwil 3 in Banten Province, Vokerwil 4 in Makasar, Vokerwil 5 in Balikpapan and Jakerwil 6 was held in Bali Province.

"The participants are champions in the 1-6 Regional Office and athletes who are automatically netted into the selection system according to the list of athlete rankings issued by the Taekwondo Indonesia Integrated System or TIIS application system," said Ruminta.
