Last Minute Goal Disallowed, Emery Disappointed Aston Villa Failed To Win Against Juventus

JAKARTA - Aston Villa should have won the match if the last minute goal was not disallowed. Unai Emery's manager was disappointed that Villa had to settle for a 0-0 draw in the Champions League match against Juventus at Villa Park Stadium, Thursday, November 28, 2024 in the morning WIB.

The game ended dramatically. Villa almost won when winger Morgan Rogers broke into Juve's goal after continuing a free kick in the 90+4 minute. Or just moments before the final whistle sounded.

Only referee Gil Manzano reviewed the incident via VAR because there was a possibility of a violation. After observing the incident, Manzano decided the goal was invalid. Based on his assessment, Villa defender Diego Carlos first committed a foul on Michele goalkeeper Di Gregorio in the process of creating a goal.

The referee's decision was immediately ridiculed by the host supporters. No less, it was Unai Emery's manager who expressed his disappointment because of the disallowing of the goal that should have determined the final result of the match.

According to Emery, in the incident, there was actually only a minor collision between Carlos and De Gregoria so there was no need to cancel the goal.

"It's just an interpretation problem from the referee. It's just an interpretation [of the incident of the Carlos and De Gregoria collisions]," said Emery.

"For me, the cancellation of goals is excessive. In England, incidents like that are not a violation. The reason is that only minor physical contact occurs. In Europe it could be a violation," he said again.

The disallowing of the goal made Emery disappointed. Moreover, Villa should have won the match. According to him Juve rarely creates chances compared to The Villans.

"We actually have more chance of winning than them. It must be admitted that their opponents are not easy. But we can still create opportunities," said Emery.

The match did not offer an interesting game. Juve rarely made chances because they chose to strengthen the defense. The Bianconeri strategy also made it difficult for Villa to build attacks that were able to suppress the opponent's defense.

However, the hosts still had a good chance through striker totaling Watkins in the 36th minute. However, his shot from close range was saved by Di Gregorio.

Likewise with Lucas Digne's free kick outside the penalty box towards the end of the first half. The execution only hit the post.

In the second half, Villa continued to try to press Juve with offensive play. However, their efforts never paid off.

On the other hand, Juve had a chance when winger Francisco Conceicao almost broke into Villa's goal. However, his header that welcomed a corner could be parried by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Both teams continued to attack each other even though no goals were created, Villa again had a chance to take the lead when Leon Bailey got a pass from captain John McGinn in the 70th minute. But his shot was blocked by Manuel Locatelli.

Rogers finally got the best chance in injury time. But the goal was disallowed so the score remained 0-0 until the end of the match.

The result made Villa not yet managed to return to the top eight. They are ranked ninth with 10 points.

Meanwhile, Juve, who has eight points, is ranked 19. The Italian Serie A club had to fight hard to get an automatic ticket to the last 16 of the Champions League.

"We really really want to win. What is clear is that we still have three more games that can get us into the next round," said coach Juve Thiago Motta.

Motta continued, "But most notably we play optimally in every game. This is what we show in this match."
