Luis Enrique has officially been sacked from his post as coach of the Spanish national team. Enrique was expelled after La Furia Roja was eliminated by Morocco from the last 16 of Qatar's 2022 World Cup, Tuesday.

This decision has been confirmed by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). In their latest statement, "new projects" should begin without specifying when the new coach La Furia Roja will be announced.

"We would like to thank Luis Enrique and his entire coaching staff," RFEF said in a statement quoted by BBC Sport, Thursday, December 8, 2022.

52-year-old Enrique has started leading the Spanish national team since 2018. His best achievement during that period was to bring Spain to the semifinals of the 2020 European Cup which took place last year.

The former Barcelona coach temporarily resigned from his role in 2019 because his late daughter was diagnosed with bone cancer. He then took up his post again in preparation for the European Cup last year.

After being eliminated by Italy in the semifinals of the European Cup, Enrique hopes his team can go further in Qatar. Unfortunately, they stopped in the round of 16 after losing on penalties to Morocco.

Spain's journey in Qatar actually started nicely after beating Costa Rica 7-0 in the first match of the group phase. Unfortunately after that they only drew 1-1 with Germany and lost 2-1 to Japan.

On Tuesday, Spain also only drew without 120 minutes against Morocco before their three kickers missed a penalty in the high-fives.
