JAKARTA - As Cameroon prepares for a match to be won against Brazil in the early hours of Indonesia's time, the country from the African continent hopes to emulate head coach Rigobert Song in overcoming obstacles.
Song will arguably come down as one of Cameroon's brilliant stars. The former Liverpool defender has played in four World Cups as a player and is currently appearing for the fifth time, in his role as Cameroonian coach.
Known for his banyak hair and wrong beard, Song was appointed Cameroon's head coach in February earlier this year to replace Portuguese coach Toni Conceicao.
Song then took a tough test against Algeria, helping Cameroon book their place at the 2022 World Cup after winning the second leg with a score of 2-1.
While Song is no stranger to addressing serious pressure, his biggest achievement so far has been his recovery after suffering a stroke in 2016. Speaking to L'Equipe, Song said it was his dog who saved his life.
"I'm watching TV, but I'm really tired," Song told L'Equipe
"I left the door open because I expected visitors. If the door was closed, it was over because my family was in Paris. My dog definitely felt something and startedMOking. Then people waiting to come and see me lying on the floor."
After a stroke, Song had difficulty getting an adequate hospital and he thanked then Cameroonian president Paul Biya for helping him.
"Without him [Biya] or his wife, I wouldn't be here today. I can't just thank you," Song continued
"The Cameroonian president told my family he would take care of my healing process and he flew me to Paris."
In a coma, Song said he had a series of vision that eventually helped him recover, including a meeting with his father who died when he was a child.
"It was like a dream," said Song.
"I reunited with my ancestors. My father died when I was 9 years old, but I recognized him. He told me: 'What are you doing here? You have to come back.'
Song hopes to instill his resilience to recover from a stroke to his players as Cameroon faces Brazil in the early hours of the morning. The African country has only qualified for the knockout system round once, namely at the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
