JAKARTA Manchester City officially signed Manuel Akanji. This Swiss international defender was signed from Borussia Dortmund on a five-year contract.
City announced the signing of Akanji on their official website on Thursday, September 1 local time. However, details of the transfer fee were not detailed by the club based at the Etihad Stadium.
"I'm happy to be here and can't wait to get started. City has been one of the best teams in Europe over the past few seasons," Akanji said.
The 27-year-old left Borussia Dortmund after making 158 appearances for the German giant since January 2018.
Meanwhile, with the Swiss national team, Akanji has a record of 41 caps. He played a key role in qualifying for the Qatar 2022 World Cup which will take place later this year.
Akanji said his move to City was the right move. He called City a team that plays beautiful and competitive football from season to season.
"Pep Guardiola is an amazing manager and it's an amazing squad of players. So this is an exciting opportunity for me," he said.
"I'm really looking forward to testing myself in the Premier League and I'm going to do everything I can to help this club be a success," he added.
Akanji is Guardiola's fifth signing during this summer's transfer window. He will rejoin former team-mate at Dortmund, Erling Haaland.
