Premier League For The First Time Led By Women: Alison Brittain, CEO Of Whitbread's Hospitality Business

JAKARTA - The Premier League on Tuesday announced the appointment of Alison Brittain as the first woman to become chairman of the English domestic league.

Brittain was elected chairman of the Premier League after a unanimous vote of Premier League clubs. The CEO of the Whitbread hospitality business will replace interim chairman Peter McCormick early next year.

McCormick was previously appointed interim chairman of the Premier League after then-chairman Gary Hoffman resigned due to strong protests from a number of clubs over the Saudi Arabian company's decision to acquire Newcastle United.

"The Premier League is of immense national importance, is loved by so many people around the world and can have a tremendous positive impact on society," Brittain said in a statement.

"It has been a privilege to be able to help develop future plans and work with all key stakeholders to ensure the league's sustainability and long-term success."

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said Brittain was a good fit for the position because of his experience in the business.

“He has a great track record in business, can do his job with humility and is well respected throughout the industry where he works. He also has an interest in the league and how to develop it," said Masters.

Brittain, 57, has spent nearly two decades at Barclays, and was on the advisory board of the last three British prime ministers.
