The win saw Bivol retain his WBA light heavyweight belt.
Meanwhile Canelo, also 31, is the undisputed super middleweight champion but has stepped up to heavyweight to challenge the Russian.
Canelo's side have activated the rematch clause with Bivol in the post-fight interview.
If Canelo can avenge his defeat, he will most likely be considered the best fighter in the world.
