Napoli had only reaped the fruits of their dominance two minutes before the break when Andrea Petagna found Sampdoria's goal with a shot from the center of the box to break the deadlock.

The hosts then fired no less than 14 more attempted shots in the remainder of the game, but failed to add to the margin of advantage.

Those failures almost paid off when Fabio Quagliarella and Francesco Caputo strafed the Napoli defense, their goal remaining pure until the whistle.

Napoli remains in third place with 43 points, still five points behind AC Milan who a few hours earlier rose to the top.

Meanwhile, Sampdoria, who has not won in the last four matches, has not moved from 15th place with 20 points.
