JAKARTA - The English Premier League has decided to postpone two matches, namely Liverpool against Leeds United and the match between Wolves and Watford, due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases.

Both games were scheduled to start on December 26, but have been canceled following requests from Leeds and Watford.

The league said Leeds could not play "due to the number of players infected with COVID-19, injured and sick."

Watford's matches against Burnley, Crystal Palace, and Wolves have also had to be postponed due to the coronavirus case.

"Watford continues to have an insufficient number of players to form the team after their match against Crystal Palace last Saturday was postponed following the COVID-19 case," the Premier League wrote on its official website, Thursday, as quoted by Antara.

"After the players have completed their quarantine, Watford are fully expected to play their game on Tuesday, 28 December, against West Ham United."

Leeds announced there were "five new positive cases of COVID-19 in the first team squad and staff."

The Elland Road club added: "All of our (COVID-19) cases are asymptomatic which we believe is due to the high use of the vaccine."

"The positive cases, combined with our well-documented injury concerns have meant we won't have enough first-team players to meet the Premier League's requirements for the match."

The two latest postponements mean there are now 12 Premier League games postponed due to the increase in coronavirus cases.

Recent checks have revealed that there have been 90 positive cases, but Premier League clubs on Monday decided against making any changes to the fixture list.
