JAKARTA - Indonesia again mourns the loss of a sports legend. Former archery athlete, Leane Suniar died due to colon cancer.

Regarding the sad news, the Indonesia Olympian Association (IOA) conveyed its condolences. They were also devastated by the departure of Leane, who is also a hero to the Indonesian archery world.

“The IOA extended family expresses their condolences for the death of the Indonesian archery hero, Dr. Leane Suniar. The deceased was an archery legend who had achievements and throughout his life continued to devote himself to the world of Indonesian sports," said IOA Chairman Yayuk Basuki in a written statement received by VOI on Monday, November 22.

Leane is known to have suffered from colon cancer since 2019. She breathed her last while undergoing treatment at Gatot Subroto Hospital, Jakarta on Sunday, November 21 at 21.30 WIB.

During their time as athletes, Leane and Donald Pandiangan represented Indonesia at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. In the world's grand multi-event sporting event, Leane was ranked ninth with a score of 2352 which equaled the world record of her time and also successfully broke the national record.

After retiring, Leane became a lecturer in Nutrition Science at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI). In 2018 he served as Director of Medical & Doping Control Indonesia Asian Games 2018 Organizing Committee (INASGOC).

Leane also received an award from the All Indonesian Sports Women's Association (Perwosi) on December 17, 2018. At the end of her life, Leane was listed as one of the Committees of the Indonesian NOC's Ethics Council.

Currently, Leane's body is still buried at the Sentosa funeral home, RSPAD, Jakarta. Later, the deceased will be dispatched to the family funeral in North Sumatra on Thursday, November 25, 2021.
