JAKARTA - US Open Champion Emma Raducanu appointed Torben Beltz of Germany as her new coach. The decision came after the Briton fell in the opening match of the Linz Open in Austria on Tuesday.
The 18-year-old has not had a coach since splitting with Andrew Richardson two weeks after winning the US Open by surprise in September when he became the first qualifier to win a major tournament.
"Obviously it's a great honor to work with such an experienced coach. I'm obviously very excited to work with him throughout pre-season and next year," said Raducanu, who is the top seed at Linz, quoted by Antara, Wednesday.
Raducanu lost 6-1 6-7(0) 7-5 to Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu.
He admitted that he was enthusiastic about working with his new coach later.
Beltz recently split with Angelique Kerber after guiding the former world number one to the Australian Open and US Open titles in 2016.
"He has obviously worked well with Kerber who is a great player and has done very well and won three Slams and I think that experience definitely helps an inexperienced person like me..." Raducanu added.
The 44-year-old coach also coached Croatian Donna Vekic from 2017 to 2020 helping her break into the top 20 before rejoining Kerber last year.
