JAKARTA - Honda is preparing to stop production of the only pure electric car currently marketed in Europe. This decision is part of the company's re-evaluation of its electrification strategy, where sales of the e:Ny1 model will be stopped just three years after its debut.
Although it sounds sudden, this step does not mean that Honda is leaving the electric vehicle market, because they have prepared a replacement model in the form of a Super-N hatchback that targets a different segment.
Reported by Carscoops, Tuesday, April 21, e:Ny1 is the result of Honda's collaboration with Dongfeng and began entering the European market in mid-2023. This model is basically an electric version of the HR-V for the local market.
In terms of design, the appearance is very similar to the hybrid variant, but the development comes from China. Where this model has been sold under the name e:NS1 and e:NP1 since 2022.
According to a report by German media Handelsblatt, e:Ny1 is no longer appearing in the configurator in a number of major markets such as Germany, Italy, and Spain. However, this model can still be ordered in France and Austria.
Honda is said to be shifting the remaining stock to the UK and the Nordic region, a region with relatively stronger demand. Intense competition is one of the main factors weakening the performance of e:Ny1 sales.
This model is losing out to newer rivals and has a more competitive price, both from European and Chinese manufacturers. Even after the price in Germany was cut from 47,590 euros to 38,990 euros, Honda was only able to sell 105 units throughout last year.
In terms of specifications, the e:Ny1 is built on the e:N Architecture F platform with a single electric motor with 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS). The car is equipped with a 68.8 kWh battery capable of covering a distance of up to 412 km based on the WLTP standard.
Compared to the European version of the HR-V, the e:Ny1 comes with a new front fascia that integrates a charging port in the grille, transparent rear lights, and a 15.1-inch vertical touch screen in the cabin.
The discontinuation of this model in Europe reflects Honda's broader global strategy changes. The manufacturer has previously also confirmed the cancellation of a number of electric vehicle projects for the North American market, including the Acura RSX, the 0 Series sedan and SUV, as well as the Afeela sedan and SUV models resulting from the collaboration between Sony Honda Mobility.
However, Honda has not completely abandoned electric vehicles. Instead, they will present the Super-N in Europe and the UK after launching it in Japan first.
This small electric hatchback is inspired by the Honda City Turbo II, sporting a sporty look with 94 hp power. The price is estimated to start at under 20,000 pounds, making it a more affordable option with a unique character.
Currently, Honda's product line in Europe is dominated by hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, after all pure internal combustion engine models were officially discontinued since the end of 2022.
