JAKARTA - Automotive giant Chery has confirmed the presence of one more brand that has a strong British "taste": Freelander.

The name Freelander is certainly not unfamiliar to SUV lovers. This name was previously legendary as one of the iconic models from Land Rover. Now, through a strategic collaboration (Joint Venture) between Chery and JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) which has been established since 2012, the name is reborn as an independent brand ready to hit the road globally.

Reported by CarExpert, Monday, April 13, Chery Australia has confirmed that the Freelander is scheduled to enter the Kangaroo Country market in 2027. Although the details of the specifications are still closely guarded, this move marks a new phase of the Chinese-British collaboration. Previously, Chery only assembled JLR cars for the Chinese domestic market, now they will produce Freelander for the world market.

Last month, Freelander showed off the Concept 97. The number "97" itself is taken from the first year of production of the Land Rover Freelander (1997). Visually, this concept brings retro design elements from the first two generations of Freelander, but with a very strong modern touch.

Entering the interior, don't expect an old-fashioned impression. Freelander is equipped with a large free-standing infotainment screen and a pillar-to-pillar screen that stretches along the base of the windshield. For the engine, this car is predicted to use Chery's T1X platform which is very flexible for Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) technology as well as pure electric (EV).

Freelander is not the only "child" of Chery that will invade Australia. Until the end of 2027, consumers will be presented with a variety of brand choices from the same group with different target markets. Interestingly, Chery claims that the number of these brands does not mean that they are mutually dropping in caste (from cheap to luxury). Instead, each brand is aimed at a different lifestyle group.

Freelander, with its big name that has been known since 1998 to 2015, has a big advantage in terms of brand awareness compared to other new brands. For those who miss the toughness of Land Rover but want the efficiency of Chery technology, Freelander is predicted to be an interesting choice.
