JAKARTA - Mercedes-Benz officially launched the 2027 facelift S-Class with significant updates for the current generation. Its flagship luxury sedan now comes with a more assertive visual identity, with a variety of modern features.
The German manufacturer claims that more than 50 percent of vehicle components have been developed, updated, or improved, marking the importance of this refresh for their flagship model. As reported by Rushlane, Saturday, January 31.
In terms of appearance, the 2027 S-Class looks more imposing. The front grille is about 20 percent larger and can now light up, displaying a three-dimensional chrome star element.
The star emblem on the engine hood can also glow, giving a dramatic impression at night.
The lamp design is also updated: the DIGITAL LIGHT headlight carries a double star motif, while the new LED taillights adopt similar elements to strengthen the brand identity.
There is also a light projection feature that reads Mercedes-Benz on the ground near the door when passengers enter or exit. Mercedes also introduced the latest generation of DIGITAL LIGHT based on micro-LED.
The high-resolution illumination field is claimed to be 40 percent larger than before, improving night visibility as well as efficiency. This system adapts the light pattern adaptively using camera and navigation data, emphasizing safety focus.
Entering the cabin, the S-Class goes further towards a fully digital luxury experience. Traditional wood accents are now replaced by the MBUX Superscreen that stretches across the dashboard, integrating a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 14.4-inch center infotainment screen, and a 12.3-inch front passenger screen.
The entire system runs on the latest MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System) which allows for faster processing, deeper system integration, and extensive over-the-air updates. The dashboard, center console, and steering wheel have also been redesigned.
Interestingly, some physical controls are back on the steering wheel in response to customer feedback that the full touch interface is less than ideal for daily use.
The latest MBUX system now adopts generative AI with ChatGPT-based conversation capabilities, enabling more natural voice interactions through the "Hey Mercedes" virtual assistant.
Rear row comfort remains a key strength of the S-Class. The facelift version offers two 13.1-inch entertainment screens, a removable rear control tablet, video conferencing support, up to ambient lighting and improved comfort features. Mercedes continues to position the S-Class as a walking meeting room.
For the matter of the engine, the 2027 S-Class comes with various options depending on the market. The S 450 and S 500 variants rely on a 3.0-liter six-cylinder inline mild-hybrid gasoline engine. The S 580 4MATIC still retains a more than 530 hp twin-turbo V8 mild-hybrid, a rare exception in the era of electrification.
Some markets also get the S 350 d and S 450 d diesel options, as well as the S 450 e and S 580 e plug-in hybrids with enough pure electric range for urban use.
The rear wheel steering feature up to 10 degrees, AIRMATIC air suspension, and optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL are still available to maintain driving comfort.
Safety aspects are also improved through the latest generation of MB.DRIVE assistance systems, more advanced sensor hardware, and updated computing architecture.
Its features include advanced adaptive cruise control, lane assistance, steering support, and automatic parking with a 360-degree camera.
Mercedes-Benz has opened pre-orders for the latest S-Class in Europe starting January 30, 2026, with a gradual launch in various markets following later.
Pricing and variant strategies will differ in each region.
