JAKARTA - General Motors (GM) has confirmed that it will temporarily stop operations at the Flint assembly plant in Michigan during the Christmas and New Year's holiday period. However, this step is not triggered by weakening market demand, but to prepare for maintenance work and major projects at the facility.
The Flint assembly plant that produces the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD is scheduled to cease operations starting December 24. New production will resume on January 26, 2026, or more than a month later.
In a statement to GM Authority, the company said that this production pause was used for internal agendas. However, the company has not detailed what projects will be worked on during the suspension.
"The Flint Assembly Plant will take an extended period of time to complete planned maintenance and project work," GM wrote.
A number of speculations say that this temporary closure could be related to the preparation for the introduction of GM's sixth-generation small block V8 engine, which is rumored to be launched in 2027.
The long working time is considered in line with this possibility, although GM has not yet given an official confirmation. Flint is not the only GM facility that has undergone a production pause longer than usual.
The US-based manufacturer also confirmed that its Bowling Green plant in Kentucky, which produces the Chevrolet Corvette, had stopped operations since the start of this week and would only reopen on January 12. Normally, the plant only closes for about two weeks at the end of the year, not up to four weeks.
For the Bowling Green plant, the production pause is said to be more related to inventory management. Sales of sports cars such as the Corvette generally slow down in the winter, so additional production risks piling up at dealers.
The latest report even notes the availability of a considerable stock of Corvettes, consisting of 46 units of the 2024 model, 1,417 units of the 2025 model, and 4,981 units of the 2026 model throughout the United States. As reported by Carscoops, Wednesday, December 17.
GM's move shows that temporary production halts are not always a sign of business weakness. Rather, part of the company's mid-term operational strategy and preparations.
