Jaguar Denies Firing Head of Design Gerry McGovern

JAKARTA - The automotive world is filled with confusing news related to Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). The name of Chief Creative Officer Gerry McGovern, suddenly became the spotlight after claims circulated that he had been fired.

However, the issue was quickly denied by the company. In its latest statement, JLR confirmed that the news of McGovern's dismissal was not true, as reported by Carscoops, Tuesday, December 16.

However, the company chose not to provide further explanation, including explicitly confirming whether McGovern was still actively carrying out his role. JLR called the rumors speculation and declined to comment further.

This closed attitude has actually triggered new questions, given McGovern's very central position in the JLR body. For more than two decades, he has been a key figure behind the direction of modern Land Rover and Range Rover designs.

A number of iconic models were born under his supervision, ranging from the early generation Range Rover Evoque, Velar, the latest Range Rover line, to the revival of the Defender. Regardless of the pros and cons of the Jaguar Type 00 concept, which has been debated, McGovern's role in bringing JLR through major changes.

He is the face of the brand's design transformation amid the industry's shift towards electrification. Rumors of the dismissal spread just days after JLR's long-time Chief Executive Adrian Mardell officially retired and his position was taken over by PB Balaji.

Balaji's background as a former Tata Motors finance executive has fuelled speculation that he will start his leadership with a significant overhaul. The situation was compounded by a negative reaction from some of the public to Jaguar's new design direction.

The combination of leadership changes and visual controversies makes the story about McGovern's departure seem plausible, although it is not necessarily true. "It is not true that we have terminated Gerry McGovern's employment contract and we do not intend to comment further on speculative news," a JLR spokesperson told Motor1.

However, the statement also did not explicitly confirm McGovern's current status. Until now, his name is still listed on the JLR People page on the company's official website, indicating that he is still part of the organization.

For the time being, McGovern is believed to remain in his position and continue to oversee Jaguar Land Rover's design direction, especially as the company prepares to enter a new phase with a line-up of electric models and the next transformation of the brand identity.
